Design for a Living World at Cooper Hewitt
There are some things in life that you gotta fix before they’re broke – especially when you know it’s just a matter of time. In case you haven’t noticed, the planet happens to be one of those things. So, to get the ball rolling, the Nature Conservancy asked 10 noted industrial designers (including Izaac Mizrahi and Kate Spade) to turn 10 unconventional, eco-friendly materials into 10 practical objects. The result: vegetable ivory jewelry, plywood furniture, salmon leather dresses and shoes, chicle latex vases, and many other creations that urge us to reconsider where our everyday objects come from, what they are made of, and how they impact the earth. See the objects in the "Design for a Living World" exhibit, currently at the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, before they embark on a national tour in January.

No Nonsense Furniture
It’s a stepstool! It’s a chair! It’s...”A: Table!” This new piece by Iannone is as no nonsense as its name implies. They take reclaimed chestnut from Amish barns or locally-sourced oak, quarter sawn oak, cherry, or walnut wood and finish it with either low-VOC water-based paint or hand-polished oil wax. That’s it. No extra chemicals. No harm done to your family or the environment. Need more surface area? Check out the piece’s coffee table-sized brother (aptly called), “A: Long Table.” In case you couldn’t tell, keeping things real is something Philadelphia-based Iannone takes seriously. So, when not using sustainably-harvested woods, the design company utilizes equally-eco formaldehyde-free plywood, bamboo, or sorghum board to make their sleek modern pieces.

Dreamweavers' Tie Rug
Around 100 million neckties are sold every year in an endless array of patterns, colors, shapes, and sizes. Between the striped skinny ties, pink polka dot bowties, and "#1 DAD" ties, there are a lot of itty-bitty mismatching scraps left on the factory floor that would be rendered useless if Arkansas-based Dreamweavers didn't reclaim them. The 30-year-old rug, throw, and pillow making company hand cuts scraps of silk-blend ties into little pockets that they then stuff and sew together to make their Executive collection of rugs and pillows. The pieces are ultra plush, one-of-a-kind, machine washable, and the perfect choice for Father’s Day. Think about it. It's what you would have gotten him anyway; only he doesn't have to pretend he’ll actually wear it. Saves everybody some face, and a few scraps from the landfill in the process.

Common Sense... A must-have when it comes to interior design!
We love our homes, and we want to live well in them as long as we can. That's why, now more than ever, we want to refresh our decor without undertaking a total overhaul. Here are some quick tips on where to start:Repaint in cheerful colors; revive family heirlooms; rethink accessories; rearrange the furniture - and figure out what you can add to make rooms feel fresh. Above all, revel in the moment!Spend the money where you see it most. Bold wallpaper is great for jazzing up an entryway.- Guy ClarkNo matter what the economy looks like, you should always strive for quality. Buy fewer, better things. Get a great sofa - and plan to keep it. It's better to have one good cashmere sweater than three cheap ones.- Alessandra Branca
