The New Traditionalists

Traditional Home Magazine
April 2010

A new furniture brand aims to jazz up familiar forms

The team that started ducduc, known for modern kids' furniture, is all grown up (almost) and is launching a fresh brand: The New Traditionalists. Aimed at adults and their tots, it includes two lines: Mason Gray, with classically elegant pieces, and Union House, which offers a casual, eclectic feel. Both lines marry the emotional resonance of familiar forms with the fun of custom colors. Even better, the furniture is made from sustainably harvested hardwood with hand-applied, water-based finishes that are nontoxic. If there's a single philosophy this crew espouses it is: Buy well once. "We're not in business to make disposable furniture," says CEO Philip Erdoes. And it's true, this line has longevity - thanks to style and quality. Located in Torrington, Connecticut, the nimble factory makes each piece made to order, which thrills picky clients. What's more, it means new manufacturing in an area that's been shedding it for years. Viva The New Traditionalists!

A glamorous drum pendant reminiscent of champagne and mirror balls. Verrry snazzy. Glitzy, antiqued mirror disks edged in recyclable tin surround a 4 armed chandelier. Handmade by artisans in Mexico. Takes 4 candelabra bulbs, 40 watts each. Comes hard wired on 6 feet of white cord with a white canopy.

Layered, ruffled legs balance a chunky, round top in this ultra cute table. Handmade of papier mache from recycled materials by artisans in Haiti.
Add a splash of color to really pep things up, or choose white for a more classic appeal.

Treadmill Traveling

Never get bored with your workouts, again...
Article by Jason Daley
Popular Science Magazine
The Nordic Track X7i Incline Trainer raises and lowers itself to
mimic the dips and hills of real-world topography.
The X7i downloads maps over Wi-Fi from a website called iFit, which lets you pick popular routes like San Francisco:s Golden Gate Trail, as well as treks you've designed on your computer across any terrritory covered by Google Maps. As you run, a seven-inch screen scrolls the map and shows snapshots of passig landmarks. (The "scenery" will help distract you from the burning in your legs-the machine cranks to 40 degrees upward or six downward.) Afterward, the console sends workout data to the Web, where you can analyze and plot your next run anywhere on the planet-or beyond, since Google Moon is open fpr hikes, too.

CertaPro on SPRING

By Holly Peterson

Update Your Home With Color This Spring

Spring is the best time to re-decorate, and painting is the most affordable way to update your home. With the plethora of paint colors on the market, it can be difficult to choose. CertaPro color expert Shannon Kaye recommends six new color palettes from Sherwin Williams, ranging from classic to bold, to help you choose the most suitable colors for your home this spring.

As the sun begins to shine again, so does our need for crisp and clean colors.
Try this refreshing combination:
0052 Pearl Gray with 6714 Citrine & 6495 Great Falls

Give your room a refreshing lift with citrus tints like:
6709 Gleeful & 6700 Daybreak

Root them with soothing accents or paint your cabinets in:
6207 Retreat, or 7623 Cascades, for an easy feel

Today’s boldest color combination is pale lilac and taupe
with a sharp chartreuse or raspberry punch.
I love
6281 Wallflower with 7006 Extra White trim

with an accent of 6914 Eye Catching, or 6586 Heartfelt

Deep delicious hues are still perfect for dining rooms,
but it’s time replace your rouge walls with more vibrant colors like:
6642 Rhumba Orange, 6531 Indigo, or 6776 Blue Nile

Whether you like your walls soft or sumptuous, this classic combination,
updated for Spring, is sure to brighten any stale room:
6421 Celery, 6422 Shagreen, 6879 Daring, & 6776 Blue Nile

As last year’s grays turn to taupe, look for surprisingly luxurious color combinations like:
6046 Swing Brown, 7703 Earthen Jug, 6887 Navel, & 7638 Jogging Path

A new coat of paint, whether it’s clean and subtle or drawing on this year’s bright color trends of turquoise, fuchsia, and orange, can brighten up your home and let the Spring light in.

For more tips and information about color, techniques and finishes,

A Recycle Program That Makes Sense

By Holly Peterson

For those of you who need a little incentive to recycle... RecycleBank launched April 5th in Los Angeles, paying cash to single-family homes with extra goods to dispose of. One of the advantages of the program is that it requires no extra bins or effort: RecycleBank simply outfits your existing bins with a special ID tag. When the bins are weighed each time they are collected, the family accrues points which can be redeemed at local retail outlets (encouraging local commerce!). RecycleBank has already had success with the program in over 1000 commercial locations. The company hopes to roll out the program to over 700,000 families in the Los Angeles, in the next year. Read all the details on the RecycleBank website.

I think this may be the a best approach to a recycle program, that we have seen so far!
Keep up the great work RecycleBank!
Hoping that San Diego will catch on soon...
