Who is... Hive Modern???

By Holly Peterson

From Hive:
"Hive was founded in 2002 with the idea that Good Design can and should be presented in an inspired, knowledgeable and friendly manner."

"From humble beginnings fueled primarily on inspiration, hive has grown to inhabit its own free-standing building in the Pearl District, Portland's most upscale urban neighborhood. We are proud to be an authorized retailer for Alessi, Artemide, Artifort, Carl Hansen, Cassina, Flos, Kartell, Knoll & Vitra to name just a few. hive has been noted in national magazines such as Dwell, Index, In Style, Lucky and Western Interiors magazines."

"We like to think of hivemodern.com, as the web-stop for the savvy design enthusiast.... bringing the rare and unusual plus time-tested icons of design directly to your front door. Our manifesto is really quite simple: to share the joys of Good Design while providing value and excellence in service to our patrons. Whether you simply enjoy browsing the product pages to see what's new, or dive directly in and order a quantity of Eero Aarnio Ball Chairs, we hope to foster a fun web-based environment where people can delight in Good Design on their own terms."

"C" Table

  • Designed by: Scott White
  • Made by: White Design
Curving around like the crest of a plywood wave, the "C" table—designed by Albuquerque-based Scott White, with a little help from Mara Schweikert of Soma Interiors—hollows out beneath a flat top to make space for a stack of magazines. Scrap from each piece is then used to create additional accessories, resulting in a highly efficient, low-waste system.

Good on Paper

By Holly Peterson

Coming to a major city near YOU...

Who says print is a dying medium? These artists have discovered more creative outlets for wastepaper than the recycling bin. Junk-mail-on-canvas is the medium of choice for Sandhi Schimmel Gold, who up-cycles paper and cards into collaged portraits on view in Los Angeles through September 15 at the Loft at Liz's. Galia Gluckman, winner of an eco award at New York's International Artexpo, takes a similar approach, cutting up magazines and other printed papers and pasting them in mosaiclike compositions on large pieces of hardboard. Phillip Hua, who's demonstrating how he works during San Francisco's SOMA Open Studios on October 24 and 25, forges visual dynamics between economics and the environment by printing multicolored digital images of trees on pages from the Wall Street Journal. And the trend transcends mere individuals. New York's Museum of Arts and Design unveils "Slash: Paper Under the Knife" on October 7.

Enjoy!

Fitness Anyone?

Beginner Kettlebell Workshop...
Check out the workout routine you've been waiting for!

A 'kettlebell' or girya (Russ.) is a traditional Russian cast iron weight that looks like a cannonball with a handle. The ultimate tool for extreme all-round fitness.

The kettlebell goes way back, it first appeared in a Russian dictionary in 1704 (Cherkikh, 1994). So popular were kettlebells in Tsarist Russia that any strongman or weightlifter was referred to as a girevik, or 'a kettlebell man'.

"Not a single sport develops our muscular strength and bodies as well as kettlebell athletics," reported Russian magazine Hercules in 1913.

Why train with kettlebells?

Because they deliver extreme all-round fitness. And no single other tool does it better. Here is a short list of hardware the Russian kettlebell replaces: barbells, dumbbells, belts for weighted pullups and dips, thick bars, lever bars, medicine balls, grip devices, and cardio equipment.

Kettlebell Beginner Workshop (4 hours)

The Beginner Workshop is geared toward the absolute Kettlebell beginner. Participants will learn proper form and technique with an emphasis on safety. The beginner workshop will prepare participants for more advanced classes and personal Kettlebell training sessions. This class is normally $100, but we are currently offering a 20% discount for all beginners that sign up online. Take advantage of this class for only $80!

Upcoming Workshop Dates: September 19, October 17, November 21

Enjoy!
